Bacardi – CHP Plant

Fermin Industrial Metal Works Inc. (FIMW) played a key role in the mechanical construction of Bacardi’s Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in Cataño, Puerto Rico. Completed between 2022 and 2023, the project exemplifies renewable energy integration and circular economy practices, using biogas recovered from Bacardi’s rum distillation process in combination with LPG to power operations.

The plant generates:

  •  3,113 kWe of electricity
  • 300 RT of chilled water
  • 34 tn/h of steam via an HRSG with a post-combustion burner, supported by a conventional dual-fuel boiler

FIMW completed the fabrication, assembly, structural supports, inspections, and testing of all mechanical systems, including:

  •  LPG and Biogas Systems (LPG, BG)
  • Chilled Water System (CHW)
  • Saturated Steam and Condensate System (SS, CRW)
  • Industrial and Purge Water Systems (IW, PUW)
  • Demineralized and Drinking Water Systems (DEMI, DW)
  • Compressed Air System (CA)
  • Exhaust Gas System (EXH)
  • Turbine Auxiliary Systems (air intake, ventilation, etc.)

This installation is a benchmark for sustainable industrial energy solutions, aligning with Bacardi’s environmental commitments while enhancing energy reliability, efficiency, and production continuity.

Planta CHP de Janssen, Gurabo PR

Fermin Industrial Metal Works Inc. (FIMW) led the mechanical installation of the cogeneration (CHP) plant at Janssen Ortho, LLC in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. The facility features two Rolls-Royce KEe natural gas engines (6.75 MW total), supported by an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (2 MW / 1 MWh), and a heat recovery system for both steam and hot water production.

The plant includes:

  •  HRSG producing 3.2 tn/h of steam at 10 barg
  • 2 heat exchangers generating 2,500 kWt of hot water at 65 °C
  • LNG storage and regasification: 2 × 125 m³ tanks and 2 atmospheric vaporizers (4-day autonomy)

FIMW completed the fabrication, assembly, structural supports, inspections, and testing of all mechanical systems, including:

  •  Hot Water Circulation System (HTC)
  • Hot Water System (HTW)
  •  Low-Temperature Water System (LTW)
  • High-Temperature Circulation System (HCA)
  •  Natural Gas System (NG)
  •  Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) System (GNL)
  • Lubrication Oil System (LO)
  • Lubrication Oil Pump System (LOP)
  •  Exhaust Gas System (EXH)
  • Compressed Air System (CA)
  • Urea System (for emissions reduction)

Completed between August 2023 and May 2024, this project enhanced energy reliability, sustainability, and operational efficiency for Janssen Ortho’s manufacturing operations in Puerto Rico.

Kenvue – Las Piedras Cogeneration Plant

Fermin Industrial Metal Works Inc. (FIMW) led the mechanical installation of the cogeneration (CHP) plant at Kenvue in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico. The facility features two Bergen high-efficiency natural gas engines (6.74 MW total), designed to provide electricity, steam, and hot water for manufacturing operations, while achieving a 44% reduction in carbon footprint and 25% cost savings compared to the previous system.

The plant includes:

  • 2 × Bergen natural gas engines producing 6,740 ekW
  • Steam production (100 PSI): 3,260 kg/h (7,200 lb/h) at 6.9 BarG (100 PSIG)
  • Steam production (conventional): 9,980 kg/h (22,000 lb/h) at 6.9 BarG (100 PSIG)
  • Hot water from engine cooling circuit: 2,433 kW (8.3 MMBtu), 144 m³/h (5,085 CFH) at 66 °C (150 °F)
  • LNG storage and regasification: 2 × 33,000-gallon LNG tanks and 2 × 11,700 SCFT/h vaporizers

FIMW completed the fabrication, assembly, structural supports, inspections, and testing of all mechanical systems, including:

  • Hot Water Circulation System (HTC)
  • Hot Water System (HTW)
  •  Low-Temperature Water System (LTW)
  •  High-Temperature Circulation System (HCA)
